Hello Explorer Families! The Del Sur PTA has lots of exciting news to share with you as we wrap up this school year and head into summer. As our school community continues to grow, we have been mindful of your questions, concerns and comments in crafting our calendar and programs for the next school year. Here are some highlights which you can look forward to as you and your families prepare for the 2019-2020 school year, which starts on August 21st!

School Wide Paper Drive

In past years, we have placed the burden of supplying, storing and rationing copy paper on individual teachers and their parent volunteers. Starting this Fall, Del Sur Elementary will be switching to a school wide paper drive, which will stock the copy room with paper for the entire school community to share and use. Paper will be collected at school events throughout the year, with a HUGE grade-level contest taking place at the Back to School Picnic in August.

Keep in mind that our 1000+ students, staff and administrators go through a LOT of paper, even when they are trying their best to conserve, and your generous donations will keep our school running a lot smoother - especially for the parent volunteers in the copy room!

In order to build a supply of copy paper before the next school year starts, our first school wide paper drive will take place in conjunction with the ASB Carnival on June 7th. Make sure to bring a ream of plain white copy paper in exchange for 20 carnival tickets!

School Supply Packs

With the exception of TK and 1st Grade, teachers have elected to try School Supply Packs in lieu of your traditional back to school supply list. We hope this will be both cost effective and time efficient for all of our busy Del Sur Families. The link to purchase School Supply Packs will be published on the Del Sur PTA website, as well as the Del Sur Elementary website over the summer.

** 6/12 EDIT: Please note, 5th grade also will not be participating in the School Supply Packs. Also, some grade levels will have the option to choose a School Supply Pack or purchase directly from a list of school supplies. Further updates will be announced during the summer break.

College Shirts and Character Counts

In hopes of streamlining the class college shirt process and ensuring that all students have their class college shirt as early as possible in the school year, PTA will begin the class college shirt process over the summer and have order forms ready for you to submit on Back to School Night. Each grade level will also have a "Character Counts" shirt for purchase in the color designated for their grade. Both shirts will be available in a discounted package for parents.

Class Funds vs. Teacher Gifts

Starting in the 2019-2020 school year, there will be a uniform "ask" by grade level for class funds, and all parents will receive a summary of what is supposed to be covered by those class funds. All room parents will also be provided with a template spreadsheet to provide all parents with a detailed accounting of how class funds are spent throughout the school year. Additionally, teacher gifts will be separated from class funds across the board, and your individual room parent will decide whether to do a separate ask on special occasions.

Dynamic Scrip

We are in the process of finalizing the details with a charitable giving company called Dynamic Scrip to create a continuous stream of "free money" for our school. We anticipate that this program will replace traditional fundraisers like Ralphs Club, Amazon and Box Tops. Dynamic Scrip works a lot like Ebates, wherein users will designate what percentage of their cash back gets donated to the school. We are excited to roll out this program in August.

But before we break for summer...

Del Sur Elementary's Annual Field Day is on Friday June 7th. Here is the schedule for Field Day:

- 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. - PreK, TK and Kinder

- 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. - Grades 1, 2 and 2/3 Combo

- 1:10 to 2:50 p.m. - Grades 3, 4 and 5

It will be a hot day, so make sure you stop by Danny's Ice Cream Truck after school to purchase a cold treat and support the Del Sur PTA. And come back at 5:30 p.m. to enjoy the Del Sur ASB's student run carnival, with cotton candy, nachos and the Master Sports obstacle course! PS: Don't forget to bring your ream of plain white copy paper to exchange for carnival tickets!

Call to Action - Parent Volunteers!!!

None of the foregoing activities can be successfully executed without the help of parent volunteers. Please consider volunteering your time at Field Day and/or the ASB Carnival to ensure a good (and safe!) time is had by our entire student community.
